FDS were awarded the subcontract to demolish and remove the façade of a 4 storey office block in Chelsea. The façade was constructed of cavity brick and block and complete with aluminium windows and lead capping. The works had been planned such that waste arising would be transported down to a gantry by a beam hoist but adverse weather conditions throughout the project prevented this. As such, FDS had to re-orientate their approach and worked with the Main Contractor to find alternative methods of transporting rubble while minimising manual handling requirements.
The second phase of the work involved removal of all roof build up back to structural slab. This included slabs, insulation and lytag as well as a number of structural plinths. FDS had to plan works carefully around other trades at roof level to prevent material build up in bad weather conditions.
Some 300mm of build up was stripped back from the roof finish – a huge quantity of material in a tight space
